The Facts on Eye Floaters

Eye floaters can make it nearly impossible to go about your daily activities. You’re constantly plagued by spots in front of your eyes. There are several symptoms of eye floaters, including:
  • Black spots in front of the eye
  • Flashing lights, making it difficult to drive
  • Fuzzy vision
  • Cloudy strands resembling cobwebs in front of the eye
Why do floaters occur?
Eye floaters tend to develop as you age. Your eye’s vitreous starts to shrink, and small clumps of gel begins to form in the eye. The vitreous also becomes slightly stringy. These clumps are the “floaters” you are seeing in your eyes.

Eye Floaters and Related Eye Diseases
Eye floaters can also be signs of more serious eye diseases, such as:

  • Vitreous Detachment: The vitreous gives the eye its round shape. Tiny fibers connect the vitreous to the retina. As the vitreous shrinks due to age, the fibers pull on the retina, and may break, causing vitreous detachment. Vitreous detachment is a very common eye disease and typically does not result in blindness. However, it is best to consult with your eye doctor about how eye floaters may result from vitreous detachment.

  • Retinal Detachment: Unlike vitreous detachment, retinal detachment is a dangerous condition that can result in blindness. The retina is the light sensitive inner lining of the eye that transfers messages through the optic nerve to your brain. An increase in the number of eye floaters can signal retinal detachment, and it is important you contact your eye doctor immediately. Laser surgery can usually be used to correct the problem, although surgery may be required.
Eye Floaters Treatment
Eye floaters can be extremely annoying for anyone who experiences them. They can affect your driving skills, ability to read, and hobbies like painting and photography. Surgical removal of the gel and replacement with salt water is rarely recommended.
